From January 1 to December 31, 2017, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine presided over the Association of constitutional justice of the counties of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions (BBCJ).
Under the presidency of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine the 2nd Congress of the Association “The role of constitutional courts in interpreting the provisions of national constitutions in the context of the generally recognised principles and norms of international law and EU law, judgments of international courts“ was organised and held on June 1-2, 2017 in Kharkiv.
In addition, the General Assembly of the BBCJ, held on June 2, 2017 in Kharkiv, considered and approved report of the Secretary General of the BBCJ for 2016, established printed publication of the Association “The Journal of the Association of Constitutional Justice of the Countries of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions” and agreed that the following BBCJ Congress would take place in the second half of May in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Upon the results of the Congress, its participants adopted a Resolution, the text of which was sent to the World Conference on Constitutional Justice, the Conference of European Constitutional Courts, the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), European Court of Human Rights and European Court of Justice.
At the end of June 2017, BBCJ members took part in the XVII Congress of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts “Role of Constitutional Courts in upholding and applying constitutional principles”.
Within the framework of the 4th Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice organised by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania, working meeting of the BBCJ members was held in Vilnius on September 11, 2017.
Preparatory meeting of Vilnius Forum organised within the framework of the development cooperation project “Assistance to the Constitutional Courts of Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine in Ensuring the Implementation and Protection of the Principles of the Rule of Law in the Context of the Regional Challenges” took place on October 24-25, 2017 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
According to the BBCJ Statute, presidency over the Association shall be held by the President of each member of the Association for a one-year term. The presidency shall rotate on the basis of the alphabetical order of the names of the states represented by the members of the Association. As of January 1, 2018 Constitutional Court of Ukraine passed its presidency over the Association of constitutional justice of the counties of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions to the Constitutional Court of Georgia.
